Mike Saves the Day (Pufferfish Adventures Book 1) Reviews

Learning to celebrate your uniqueness

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Everyone can use an infusion of self-esteem and self-confidence. Who doesn't like to be accepted by others and feel great about their uniqueness? This Pufferfish Adventure introduces you to Mike the Pufferfish who thinks he doesn't fit in unlike his best friends Sam Squid and Casey Crab. They are so cool and have lots of friends but Sam feels like a misfit. When he sucks in water he blows up like a balloon and he has spikes all over his body not scales like the other fish do. This embarrasses him and he feels ugly. He talks to his friends about his feelings but they don't seem to mind him being different. They explain to him that they too are weird and no one really cares. And then something happens that changes Mike's view of himself forever. His friends are playing hide and seek in Secret Cave and Mike is "It." After he finishes counting he swims off to find his friends and the search and find game becomes a search and rescue one. Mike discovers that his besties are in grave danger and it's up to him to save the day. Can Mike pull himself together and use his weirdness to become a superhero? Mike's weirdness turns out to be his superpower and he doesn't hesitate to use it to save his friends. Now not only do his friends celebrate his friendship and heroism but Mike is able to celebrate exactly what he is created to be... a brave, cool, popular Pufferfish that is highly accepted and belongs in his underwater community!

We are ALL weird. And it’s nice!!

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
A very sweet book... easy to understand and fun to share with your child. The illustrations are perfect. This book is a nice way to share with children the idea that EVERYONE is weird. And awesome. And being different isn’t something to tease people about, or to be ashamed of or embarrassed by. I love that Mike’s friends are like -yeah you're weird. Of course you are. We are too. Everyone is!- a much nicer scenario to reinforce with multiple readings, over books where bullies constantly ridicule someone. (I received an advance copy for review, but have posted only my honest opinion about this book. I read and consider reviews before purchasing books myself, especially children's books, and value the opinions people offer, and hope they will leave their honest opinions, and facts about the book which they think may be relevant.)

Book review for Mike Saves the Day, pufferfish adventure book 1

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Review for "Mike Saves the Day-Pufferfish Adventure Book 1". I loved the illustrations in this book! The pufferfish Mike as the main character was so engaging! The under the sea scenes on each page were really fun to look at. They went well with the story line. The artist did a great job with the illustrations giving the sea creatures character and personality. Here's the storyline. Mike is a pufferfish who doesn't feel he fits in yet he has 2 popular and cool friends in Sam Squid and Casey Crab. If Mike sucks in water he puffs up!! He feels this is a dilemma for him!! Mike tells Sam and Casey his problems. They tell him not to worry! “We’re all weird and no one cares.” Wait!!! This book shows us how Mike, who thinks he is the uncool and unpopular pufferfish, can and does save the day!! There is a 3 eyed beast and a secret cave. His 2 friends are stuck. What does a pufferfish do to save his friends? The ending is wonderful. Mike who thinks he is weird and doesn't fit in, it turns out his weirdness saves the day!! I also love the illustration here where both Casey Crab and Sam Squid are hugging Mike the pufferfish. Mike comes to accept himself for who and what he is and can do. His weirdness is cool!! We all have our weird and we all do fit in in our special way. What a great message for young listeners and readers in this book. Self esteem issues are so common among children and this is an excellent children's story to teach about self esteem! If Mike's weirdness can be cool, his self esteem just skyrocketed!! I like the "new" Mike and his growing awareness for self love! He is just being a pufferfish and that's cool! This book can be used as a great teaching tool about being yourself even if you're different from others. Learning that loving yourself is ok because you are cool!! I see lots of discussion and teaching possibilities to help young readers and/or listeners gain understanding of good self esteem. This story is told in such an engaging way, it will be a story that will be read and reread I am sure! I enjoyed rereading it myself!! I received an advanced reader copy of this book and I’m happy to provide a review that is of my own opinion.

Good story on self-worth

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
First, I’ll state that I received this set as a gift from the author to read and review. ~This is a short story, only 13 pages…which makes it perfect for mom and dad to read to their children after dinner or before bedtime. It is very colorfully illustrated, which give the little ones something to look at while listening to the story. This is the kind of story that lends itself to being read and then discussed as a family. ~We are all different…and that is what makes each and everyone of the characters in this engaging little story so important. Children will identify with the different characters and that will give mom or dad the opening to talk with them about how important Mike was to his friends…and how important the friends were to Mike. ~I would recommend this book…it would be most helpful if parents or grandparents are willing to take the time to share it with their children.

Sweet story of a fish who feels like a misfit

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
What a sweet story this is! As I have both granddaughters and a grandson, I can tell you that the 3-year-old grandson thought all the fish were cool (he doesn't quite grasp the concept of weird yet). Older kiddos, though, especially the 5-8-year-old set would probably identify with the childhood worry of being different from others. I love how the author makes Mike a hero while sharing his inner dialog of being different or odd. As a retired educator (including over a decade as a school counselor), I believe that this book would be a great tool for a class or counseling lesson for individuals or small groups. Celebrating differences!

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
New children’s book author J.T. Hobbs joins his love for reading stories to his children with writing new ones, and in this new book (his second) he is augmented by the illustrations of Michael Terry. The result – a fine pairing and a solid new addition to the library of entertaining and educational books for children. The opening of the story poses a question – ‘Mike is a Pufferfish. His best friends are Sam Squid and Casey Crab. His friends are popular and they fit in just fine. Mike doesn’t think he fits in.’ As in Hobbs’ first book OCTOPUS, the story relates the features of the pufferfish (spikes instead of scales, blowing up like a balloon when sucking water) and the story begins - Mike seeks advice from Sam Squid and Casey Crab and they reassure him that he is not weird, and Mike listens. When Sam and Casey are threatened by a Beast, Mike scares the Beast away because of his spiky body and Sam and Casey applaud his saving them from the beast, noting that Mike’s ‘weird‘ aspect saved the day – and Mike sees that indeed he does ‘fit in.’ Fun to read and enjoy the excellent images, this is a book children will love – and from which they will learn. This is another fine little book. Recommended. Grady Harp, September 19 This book is free to borrow from Kindle Ulimited

"Don't worry, it's nothing. We're all 'weird' and no one cares."

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
In this short colorful story, J.T. Hobbs teaches an invaluable lesson to kids today - being "weird" is okay and no one cares. It's a message about an ideal in America - the embrace of diversity, the support of inclusion, and the ubiquitous concept that we're all our own version of weird and "be your truth." This, however, is not the world we live in, for many reasons. But the notion is that we want everyone to be valued and appreciated in a utopia sense, and there is no better way to address this than starting with children's literature. The book itself is a short read - about thirty-some pages in total. A great short story for early readers gaining independence in their skills, the artwork is beautiful and a great companion to the author's literary style. Overall, this book is a good read and dodges any questionable material, making this truly a great book for kids regardless of one's conservative or liberal leanings. IN THE RIGHT PLACE, AT THE RIGHT TIME

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Mike is a Pufferfish. His best friends are Sam the Squid and Casey the Crab. Poor Mike hates the fact that whenever he sucks in water he blows up like a balloon. His friends tell him it is okay to be weird, but Casey feels strange and uncool. One day he is playing hide and seek with his friends when a BEAST fish comes along and threatens Sam and Casey. Mike wants to save his friends and rescue them from The Secret Cave where they are hiding. Will he find a way to help them? This is a cute, beautifully illustrated picture book for preschoolers and kindergarten children that can be used as a bedtime story or read-aloud discussion book. It reinforces the fact that each of us has strengths and teaches children to protect their friends and accept individual differences.

Cute book

Pufferfish Adventures “Mike Saves the Day” This Pufferfish Adventure introduces Mike who happens to be a Pufferfish, who thinks that he’s weird because he looks different from all of his “cool” friends like Sam Squid and Casey Crab. But it turns out that his “weird” can be a blessing in disguise. This story teaches acceptance and friendship. Mike shows great bravery. I read this story with my son and we enjoyed it. It was easy to read and it offered a valuable lesson.

Octopus!: Things You Don't Know Reviews

‘He’s one of the coolest!’

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
New children’s book author J.T. Hobbs joins his love for reading stories to his children with writing new ones, and in this, his first publication, he is augmented by the illustrations of Santhya S Radhakrishnan. The result – a fine pairing and a solid new addition to the library of entertaining and educational books for children. The opening of the story is an invitation – ‘Jump in the water and come swim with me To look at all the creatures of the sea. The Octopus deserves more attention, of all the fish he barely gets mentioned.’ And from there we learn that the Octopus has eight arms (each with a brain), and three hearts, blue blood, and sits still in the sea with little to no motion. He has no bones, can change shapes, eats clams and snails – all things that make him a very important sea creature! Fun to read in lilting rhyme and excellent images, this is a book children will love – and from which they will learn. This is a fine little debut book. Recommended. Grady Harp, September 19

Colorful, fun and educational

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Colorful, fun and educational are just some words to describe Octopus!: Things You Don’t Know by JT Hobbs. I read this book to preschool-aged children and they have been able to follow along soon enough, thanks to the rhymes. Santhya S. Radhakrishnan also did a great job with the eye-catching illustrations. The young ones I read this to are easily able to identify not just octopus but the other illustrated creatures as well. I believe this book is a great resource for little children and that it is also an awesome start for emerging literacy skills. I will definitely be on the lookout for other books by this author and its illustrator.

A Fun Book That Helps to Teach Kids About the Octopus

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
J.T. Hobbs writes this book about a magnificent sea creature that is often overlooked - the octopus. In this children’s story, Hobbs writes of the many interesting facts about this animal, such as how it has eight legs, three hearts, and a brain in each of its arms. In addition to this, the story includes many colorful illustrations which better display the facts presented and help to make reading this creative book even more enjoyable. The book is easy to read and involves a unique rhyming scheme. This helps to make it easy for young readers to read while also making sure they learn about marine life and zoology along the way. The book is only 17 pages long so it won’t be too challenging or long for a new reader. If you’re on the search for a children’s book that is fun to read but also educational, definitely consider this one.

Engaging book for children

“Octopus: things you don’t know” is a fun and educational book about the octopus way of life… Written in rhyme and full of illustrations this is an amazing book for kids to learn curious and unique facts about the octopus: how it feeds, how its ink is used and for what purposes, it has blue blood, three hearts, no bones, eight arms and a brain for each of them! The author J. T. Hobbs wrote this small and adorable book, he is a father of three children and who better than a father knows how smiling while reading or while a parent reads them a book is an important part of children's life, it can help them to feel carefree, exactly how they should be. I loved this book, it is so cute and entertaining I will read it again for sure! I highly recommend this book for your children and to enjoy some quality family time together!

Beautiful book!

There is nothing better than a good children's book and "Octopus! Things you don't know" is a beautiful trip I could take with my little nephew and we both love him. I say it's a trip because this story is more than a book. The imagination and creativity of J.T. Hobbs are reflected in each of the pages of this wonderful story producing huge satisfaction for both children and adults. I will definitely be attentive to the next releases of this author.

A delightful and interesting read

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
“Octopus: Things You Don’t Know” is a children’s book that teaches the young reader interesting facts about a well-loved sea creature — the octopus! The illustrations in the book are adorable and colorful, making it an even more interesting read for young children. The sentences are also short and simple to encourage young readers to read on their own. A wonderfully interesting and delightful book about octopuses that kids will truly love.

OMG so fun!

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Octopus! Things You Don't Know is an all-in-one book. It's fun, it's informative, it's cute(!) and so engaging. The book is full of beautiful illustrations and some seriously amazing facts about the octopus. I must say, it really is one cool creature! The book is a short read, and I do wish it was a bit longer. The facts and information was so engaging that I wish I could read more about aquatic life in general or more facts about the octopus itself. All said and done, this is the kind of book that both kids and adults will love in equal measure. Kudos to the illustrations and the writing style. It all comes together very nicely. Absolutely love this book.

Your kid will definitely like it!

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Ohhh it was definitely a sweet read! I bought this book for my younger cousin and I saw sincerely happiness in her eyes. First of all, the book is really colorful and attracts the attention of young readers. Second of all, on each page there are several sentences with help of them you can get acquainted with interesting and unusual facts about the octopus. Of course, probably adults know them, but for children it will be very exciting, because after the fact, you can observe a detailed illustration. Good qualified pictures will impress both of you. The book is small, I would probably like a little more, maybe more about the underwater world, but this is only my opinion. In general, I can advise Octopus!: Things You Don't Know because it is funny and will give you and your child positive emotions. I'm sure you will reread it! Highly recommended

Just love it!!

Octopus!: Things You Don’t Know by J.T. Hobbs(Author) and Santhya S. Radhakrishnan (illustrator) This is a children’s book that talks about the octopus! Amazing! Just love it! The book is entirely devoted to the octopus, written in beautiful rhyme, with beautiful illustrations about the bottom of the see and how the octopus lives. Perfectly explained for kids, with a cute way of presenting the octopus and its way of life, how he eats, how he changes forms, how he hides from predators, how he has this ink that helps him to run away from danger, how he sleeps and how he does everything. The book itself is quite short, but enough for kids that are starting to read or parents Reading to very young kids, the illustrations describe perfectly well what the author is saying at the moment and they are cute too. A wonderful book for kids.

Colorful and full of facts about octopus!

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This is a children’s book that teaches them about an octopus. The pictures are great, since they are fun, lively, and colorful. There are also facts presented in the book, which are great but also silly, since there are made up words that go along with the rhymes in some instances. If you are reading this to your child, there is plenty for them to see when they are looking at the pictures, and it may even lead to bigger discussions on marine life and things like that. This is great for capturing their attention as well. It is simple enough for young readers to pick up once they start reading, so they can learn while they are strengthening their reading skills. I would recommend this one for families with curious little ones, who are constantly asking questions and want to learn more about animals. It is something simple and enjoyable.

Delightful and beautiful book

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Octopus!: Things You Don’t Know by J.T. Hobbs(Author) and Santhya S. Radhakrishnan (illustrator) is truly amazing. A delightfully illustrated rhyming book, Octopus enlightens us about this odd creature of the sea. Octopuses have eight arms, we knew that, but how many of us knew each arm has a brain? And the head has one as well! How about a heart? How many hearts do you think an octopus has? Three! And his blood...is blue! Octopi stay motionless most of the time. They vary in color, amazingly enough they can be red, blue, brown, green, orange or black...or somewhere in between! Now with all those extra hearts, brains and appendages, what doesn’t the octopus have? Bones! And having no bones allows him to fit and hide in places to keep him safe. A fun book for kids and educational even for adults!

The Great Pirate Mystery

Very Fun Story

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This book is fun and quite enjoyable to read. Johnny is a very imaginative kid whose toys keep disappearing while he is asleep at night. He suspects that pirates are coming in at night and stealing his toys. Instead of being scared, Johnny sets up traps throughout his room to try to catch these pirates before they can take any more of his toys. I really liked this book and thought the author wrote a very creative story. I liked that Johnny was very brave and was fighting to protect what was his. I loved the illustrator’s pictures throughout the book as it enhanced the story even more. I also really enjoyed the ending of this book as it was very funny plus also relatable. I hope the author writes more books like this. I definitely recommend this book for all families to read together. It would make for a great bedtime story.

Pufferfish Adventures: Mike Saves the Day is an animal adventure picture book for children written by J.T. Hobbs and illustrated by Michael Terry. Mike wished he was more like his two best friends, Sam Squid and Casey Crab. Everyone liked them, and they seemed at ease wherever they were. Mike couldn’t help but feel so very different from them -- he was a pufferfish, after all. If he inhaled just a little water, he’d blow up like a balloon. He didn’t like his spikes very much either. Why couldn’t he have scales like everyone else? Why did he have to be different? His friends always said that there was nothing wrong with him. Everyone is different. But Mike was not so sure. Then, one day, when he was playing hide and seek with Sam and Casey, something frightening happened.

Mike Saves the Day addresses an issue that concerns most kids and many adults as well. There’s a sense of security in feeling that you fit in, as if you’re just like everyone else you know. As Mike discovers when his friends are in danger, his different qualities actually make him very special. They’re part of what makes him who he is. Hobbs’ story is a grand selection for story hour but it’s also suitable for a young reader to try on their own. Michael Terry’s bright and cheerful illustrations help make the reading experience both fun and exciting, and the aquatic background for this story is fabulous. Pufferfish Adventures: Mike Saves the Day is most highly recommended.

Pufferfish Adventures: Mike Saves the Day by JT Hobbs is the story of a young pufferfish called Mike and how he comes to realize that his uniqueness is what makes him so special. Mike wasn’t really happy with how he looked. He was so very different from his friends Sam the Squid and pretty Casey the Crab and Mike didn’t like it one bit. His friends don’t mind that he is so different, that he has spikes instead of fins, but Mike feels bad about his looks every time he hangs out with his friends. However, when one day he finds his friends in terrible danger, he realizes that he has to do something to help them out before it is too late. Does Mike have it in him to save his friends? He has to pull himself together and try to find a way to be the hero his friends need him to be.

This is the perfect book for children who are feeling down about something about themselves. It teaches youngsters how everyone is perfect the way they are. We all have our quirks and things that make us unique, but this is the beauty of it. Mike is the perfect protagonist; he is nice, real and very believable. The author has done an amazing job at making the story interesting for both children and the parents who are reading it to them. Mike’s struggles are natural, never dramatic and always relatable. The illustrations are beautiful and perfect for keeping children entertained and giving them a perspective of what is happening. This is a wholesome book, one that children will enjoy immensely as a bedtime story and beg parents to read it one more time. An absolute gem!

Pufferfish Adventures: Mike Saves The Day is a whimsical and fun children’s picture book penned by author J T Hobbs, with illustrations by Michael Terry. With a moral of self-love and boosting self-confidence behind the plot of the tale, we meet our hero Mike the Pufferfish when he is feeling down about his appearance. Because he doesn’t look like his other fish friends, Mike feels weird and out of place, but as the story progresses, he learns that he has his own strengths to celebrate because of the unique kind of fish that he is. As Mike learns to accept himself and be confident, so the message of improved self-esteems shines through.

Author J T Hobbs has conceptualized boosting self-esteem perfectly in this delightful and colorful tale from under the sea. The illustrations by Michael Terry bring the deep color palette of the sea into every frame, whilst Mike and his friends are brought to life in both picture and text. Hobbs writes their voices and characterizes them well, expressing at first a sad and quiet side to Mike the Pufferfish as he compares himself to others and puts himself down. The book is a triumph for its ability to turn the whole emotional atmosphere in a gradual yet concise way that teaches an important lesson for its young readers. Overall, I would certainly recommend Pufferfish Adventures: Mike Saves The Day to parents of children of all ages who may need a boost and a new perspective on how to view themselves and celebrate their differences.

Pufferfish Adventures: Mike Saves the Day, by JT Hobbs, is a children’s illustrated book about Mike, who thinks he is an oddball. He wants to be like the cool gang and refuses to just let himself be who he is. Instead, he keeps laboring under the false notion that he just isn’t as good as the others. And of course, as fate would have it, one day he uses his unique abilities to help his friends who are in sudden danger. Can Mike come to grips with his differences and accept them?

This is a highly engaging story, filled with wonderful color-filled pictures that almost jump off the page. The writing style is smooth, well thought out and soothing to read. But the message is far more important for the young reader than a simple fun story. From the time kids open their eyes when they are little, they seem to automatically compare themselves with the person next to them, be it in the same household, at daycare or school, and finally in the workplace if they haven’t given up on the awful comparison trap. By using a simple story, JT Hobbs drives the point home. And fortunately, this is the type of story that readers will want to read repeatedly because of the professional artwork and the entertainment it provides. Although written for younger readers, I think older kids even up to middle grades (where comparisons really start kicking in) who read this can receive a positive reinforcement that it’s okay to be exactly who they are. Highly recommended.

Author JT Hobbs believes in the power of stories to encourage and inspire young people. In Pufferfish Adventures: Mike Saves the Day, Hobbs presents an underwater adventure with the value of self-esteem as its premise. Mike is a young pufferfish who hangs out with his friends, Sam Squid and Casey Crab. Mike has self-acceptance issues, feeling that he looks too weird for a sea creature. This insecurity stokes his thoughts that his friends look way cooler than he does, despite his friends’ reassurance that they are all weird in their own way and no one cares. One day, when they set out to play, his friends encounter unexpected trouble that puts his lack of self-esteem to the test.

Hobbs wrote this simple tale with the purpose of instilling in children that self-acceptance is a step towards recognizing their strengths and that embracing their uniqueness reinforces their interpersonal skills. Self-confidence enables them to make new friends and deal with adversity. Young children are susceptible to underestimating their self-worth, which can lead to depression. This book will help them ponder the relevant message that Mike the Pufferfish conveys. To the author, all creatures are beautiful and unique. This appreciation for seeing the beauty in everything reflects in his use of a particular creature as the story’s villain. Pufferfish Adventures: Mike Saves the Day is a fusion of a good bedtime story and a message about self-acceptance.

Jhonny, the protagonist of the story, is a boy who believes that his toys disappear at night and suspects that those responsible for the robbery are pirates. Jhonny places traps throughout his room to try to catch the thieves, but nothing seems to work. For this reason he then creates a bold plan. Will he be able to catch them? It is a creative book and its beautiful illustrations tell the story; they are very striking and descriptive drawings: If your children like to read stories or enjoy listenning a bed time tale, they will surely love it. It's a great story That my kids and i will surely recommend. Cutest story ever This was seriously the cutest book ever! I love how the rhyming made the book flowing the story was so cute! Editorial Review - Readers' Favorite: "... An absolute gem!" Editorial Review - Readers' Review: "... Hobbs’ story is a grand selection for story hour but it’s also suitable for a young reader to try on their own. Michael Terry’s bright and cheerful illustrations help make the reading experience both fun and exciting, and the aquatic background for this story is fabulous. Pufferfish Adventures: Mike Saves the Day is most highly recommended." Editorial Review - Readers' Review: "This is a highly engaging story, filled with wonderful color-filled pictures that almost jump off the page. The writing style is smooth, well thought out and soothing to read. But the message is far more important for the young reader than a simple fun story... this is the type of story that readers will want to read repeatedly because of the professional artwork and the entertainment it provides. Although written for younger readers, I think older kids even up to middle grades (where comparisons really start kicking in) who read this can receive a positive reinforcement that it’s okay to be exactly who they are. Highly recommended."
